History of Jamia Ahmadiyya Nigeria

The roots of Jamia Ahmadiyya Nigeria can be traced back to a pioneering effort in 1958, when the Jama’at in Nigeria introduced the concept of Islamic training classes. These early classes were established in Surulere, Lagos; Ijebu Ode; and Ilaro in Ogun State. Operating informally from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm daily, these sessions had no specific admission requirements or standardized curriculum and were open to individuals of all ages and genders.

As the need for a more structured and formal educational system became evident, the initiative evolved into a series of formal training schools. New institutions were established in Ijebu-Ode, Ibadan, and Ebute Meta in Lagos. Additionally, some students were sent to Jamia in Ghana and Rabwah, Pakistan, for advanced training, further developing the missionary workforce from Nigeria.

A major milestone was achieved in 1974 when Hazrat Mirza Nasir Ahmadra granted approval to establish a dedicated missionary training school for the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at in Nigeria. This vision materialized in 1979 with the founding of the Ahmadiyya Missionary Training College in Nigeria, designed to train indigenous missionaries to propagate the teachings of Ahmadiyya Islam. Before this, no such institution existed in Nigeria specifically for missionary training.

Student at first Jamia center Sabo

Initially housed in four rooms at the mosque in Sabo, Ilaro, Ogun State, the school operated temporarily there until 1987, when it moved to its permanent site along Owode Road, Ilaro. The foundation of this site was laid by Maulana Wahab Adam Sahib of Ghana, representing Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmadra.

JAMIA OPENING

At its inception, the duration of the course at Jamia Ahmadiyya was set at three years, after which graduates were ordained as full missionaries. This structure provided a solid foundation for students, enabling them to actively contribute to the mission of the Jama’at. However, in 2012, a pivotal change occurred when Jamia Ahmadiyya adopted the new name “Jamiatul Mubashireen Nigeria”. With this transition, the duration of study was extended to four years, which aimed to enrich the educational experience and broaden the scope of training for students. The first cohort of Mubashireen proudly
graduated on the 14th of June, 2015, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s evolution.

However, in the year 2023, with the permission of His Holiness Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad aba , Jamia Ahmadiyya Nigeria had its flag and logo approved by His Holiness Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad aba, along with new title “Jamia Ahmadiyya Nigeria”. The duration of study and the type of certification offered by the school remained unchanged, allowing for continuity in the quality of education and spiritual training provided to students.

Today, the school remains in Ilaro, within the southern part of Egbado (now Yewa South Local Government Area), Ogun State, Nigeria, and continues to serve as the venue for the annual Jalsa Salana Nigeria.

On the 21st of February, 1988, Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad, the fourth Khalifa of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, paid a significant courtesy visit to Jamia Ahmadiyya Nigeria. His Holiness offered heartfelt prayers for the progress and success of the school, as well as for the greater Jama’at in Nigeria. This visit
was a momentous occasion for students, staff, and the newly appointed Amir, the late Maulvi Abdur Rasheed Ahmad Agboola, who all gathered for a joint photograph with His Holiness, capturing a cherished moment in the history of the institution.
